A simple enough requirement – convert one small terraced house into a maisonette and a garden (basement) level flat.
The excitement came from turning the maisonette upside-down so that the living area was on the top floor, flooded with natural light from the new rooflights and with a clear view over the busy Coronation road in front on to the river.
This left the street level for the bedrooms which is more sensible than it sounds – the bedrooms are only really used at night when the traffic is lighter and, as with all the neighbouring houses, the street-level window has blinds for privacy, thereby making only a bedroom dark, rather than the living space.
The basement flat was at garden level to the rear and an open-plan design made the most of the original conservatory whilst overcoming the difficulty of creating a safe fire escape route.
